副大統領といえばvice-president，では副知事はdeputy governor?
vice-chairmanとdeputy chairmanはどこが違うのでしょうか？
American Heritage Dictionaryを見ると次のようになっています．
deputy n., pl. dep0u0ties. Abbr. dep., dept., d., D.
1. A person appointed or empowered to act for another.
2. An assistant exercising full authority in the absence of his or her superior
and equal authority in emergencies: a deputy to the sheriff.
3. A representative in a legislative body in certain countries.
vice- pref.
One who acts in the place of another; deputy: vice-chairman.
これを見る限り，まったく同一の意味を持っているようです．

これらと似ている言葉にactingという言葉があります．昔，若い頃，米国へ行ったときに大学の事務室に歴代の工学部長の写真が飾られていて，ある人にはacting
deanと書いてあり，「ああ，この方は行動的な人なんだな」と感心したことがありました．
acting

という訳で，副という言葉を英語に置き換えるときには意味的にはどちらでも良いけれど，習慣的にその言葉を使うということではないのでしょうか．誰か知っている方がありましたら，教えてください．
